THE POWER OF ASSOCIATION

How important are the people we spend our time hanging around with? Our parents will have told all of us when we were kids that they didn’t want us hanging around with certain kids as they were bad news. They could see what we couldn’t see. Yet as adults we do it all the time – we hang around with the wrong people, people who drag us down, people who drain our energy every time we meet them, people who are going nowhere in life.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones said that in 5 years time, we will be the same people as we are today apart from the people we spend our time with and the books we read. This is so true. Rather than hang around with the wrong people, you are better off keeping your own company. I remember someone saying to me many years ago that we should split the people we spend time with into 3 categories – those we spend a lost of time with that we should severely limit the time we spend with them, those that we don’t spend enough time with that we should spend more time in their company and those we should limit the time we spend with them. Just try it once – you will find it very cathartic, and once you have done it, you will automatically do it as you go through life. We all need to be around people who think the same as us, those we can bounce ideas off, those who are always edifying us, and those who make us feel good about ourselves., and help us get to where we want to be.

Sometimes the relationships we build as we go through life pay dividends years later. It is very rarely instantaneous. We just have to have the faith that those relationships are right for us and will benefit us. I would not have started my own business and owned and ran it for over 30 years without building relationships with successful and success minded people – the right people, people who helped me succeed

For these relationships to work, they have to be a two way thing. If you are putting in all the effort, then they are probably not the right people for you to be hanging around with. The attitude you portray is a vitally important part of this process. If you don’t have the right attitude, you will not attract people to you or your business. As tough as it may be at times, our attitude is a little thing that makes a massive difference. We all need to make sure our attitudes are spot on at all times – even in the privacy of our own home. 

This is where what we feed our bodies and our brains is so important. Our mental and physical health and wellbeing is vitally important to our success and the people we become. Healthy body, healthy mind, healthy business. Reading the right material – books that will help us – is as vital to our success as the people we spend time associating with.
